Nefertiti's statue, found in a sculptor's workshop, is one of the most recognizable icons of ancient Egypt. Made from painted limestone, it was excavated in Tell el-Amarna, the presumed residence of Akhenaten, on 6 December 1912 by German archaeologists. It was discovered in the workshop of the sculptor Thutmose. Nefertiti was the Wife of Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV) during the Eighteenth Dynasty. While Akhenaten had other wives, Nefertiti was without doubt his favourite. Nefertiti bore Akhenaten 6 daughters and no sons, and shared a near co-rulership with the king. Fifteen years after her appointment to the position of Queen of Memphis, Nefertiti mysteriously disappeared. Egyptologists have assumed that this was either due to banishment or her death. However, little evidence suggests that Nefertiti actually died. Similarly, speculation exists as to whether she was the obscure pharaoh Neferneferuaten. |
